Self-love Through the Right Skincare Ingredients and Ayurveda with Lisa Mattam

Advertisements and influencers for skincare and beauty products abound, particularly online, reminding us to adhere to society's beauty standards and pressuring us to purchase the latest items. These products, however, should go beyond aesthetics and promote self-acceptance and self-love. You can honor and care for your body by starting with the right ingredients.

In today's episode of Wisdom Wednesday, Lisa Mattam joins Rosie and Tessa to talk about the rise of clean beauty brands and how she founded Sahajan. She discusses what to look out for in skincare products and how to be more conscious of their ingredients. Listen as Lisa shares how we can draw from Ayurveda to love and care for our skin.

If you want to start loving and respecting your body with the right skincare ingredients, then this episode is for you!

  1. Understand why you should be concerned about ingredients and invest in clean skincare brands.

    Episode Highlights

    [01:04] Introducing Lisa

    • Lisa previously worked in the pharmaceutical industry and never imagined herself as an entrepreneur.

    • Seeing her daughter play with her makeup was the wake-up call. If the makeup isn't good for her daughter's skin, it's not good for Lisa's either.

    • Lisa grew up with wellness practices, but she never considered them for skincare.

    • She then worked with doctors in India to develop skincare formulations based on the old age wisdom of Ayurveda.

[4:34] “People need to go clean. They need to experience these ingredients that I grew up with and so how can I bring it to them—that's really what started the brand. We worked with two doctors in India on the formulations but I also wanted to prove that they would work against any conventional product and with that age-old wisdom.” - Click Here to Tweet This

    [06:33] On Sahajan

    • Sahajan comes from the Hindi word for intuitive.

    • It's a fitting name because of Lisa's pharmaceutical background, so creating the product is intuitive. Also, consumers have this intuition to go for clean skincare.

    • There are many things you would not want on your skin since it will absorb these ingredients.

    • Looking at ingredients is not enough. Some brands find loopholes in marketing themselves as a clean brand, like using tansy oil but adding blue coloring.

    • She believes that clinically tested, clean beauty brands will continue to grow.

[10:55] “Your skin is a digestive organ, right? You are what you're digesting…let's give you these beautiful plant-based ingredients that work and let's give them to you in the most beautiful formulations, instead of just giving them to you in small ways.” - Click Here to Tweet This

    [11:31] Consciousness in Shopping

    • Shop at reputable and curated stores for clean brands like Detox Market.

    • Remember, there's nothing worse for your skin than a poorly preserved product.

    • Having preservative-free skincare products is not practical for our way of life.

    • Check if your products have parabens, sulfates, and added colors.

[15:51] Self-Care in Your Daily Routine

    • In Ayurveda, taking care of your skin is your responsibility and is considered divine. Anointing yourself with oil from head to toe is regarded as the greatest act of self-care.

    • Like in religion, it's normal to adorn and care for the divine in skincare.

    • Look for intentional practices to turn skincare into caring for yourself and your soul.

    • Listen to the full episode to hear how Lisa practices Abhyanga, or ritual body oil.

[17:37] “Taking care of your beauty, taking care of yourself isn't actually superficial, it's actually your responsibility. Think of it as like it's the house of the soul.” - Click Here to Tweet This

    [22:00] Self-Care for Entrepreneurs

    • Entrepreneurs can get so caught up in their mission and sharing tools that they forget to practice it themselves.

    • Self-care can be as simple as lighting incense and taking a few minutes for yourself, or even unwinding by watching Netflix.

[25:59] “When we're in this world of spirituality, we think it has always to be one way. It's like, no, it's about the way we feel…it's about doing things that are right for you.” - Click Here to Tweet This

    [26:22] Choosing Eye Creams

    • The skin around the eyes is more delicate since it's thinner. It's also the body part that first shows signs of stress.

    • Avoid creams with fragrances.

    •  Be careful about retinol around the eye since it can result in clogged tear ducts.

    •  Ghee can serve as a fantastic hydrator and barrier for the skin around the eye.

    [31:45] Knowing Oils

    • Coconut, sesame, almond, and olive oils are recommended in Ayurveda.

    • In modern India, there is a belief that your body will absorb what it requires.

    • If you're picking what oil to use, consider what will nourish you.

[31:45] Support in the Beauty Industry

    • There is a lack of support for people on their beauty and wellness journey within the industry

    • Sahajan is more than a clean beauty brand. It's also a community. They send out newsletters about Ayurveda, recipes, lifestyles, and more!
