Episode Highlights

[01:57] Marc and Angel’s Origin Story

  • Marc and Angel had their awakening moment in 2008 when they experienced grief from loss and financial adversities.

  • Back then, they didn’t have the tools to deal with these struggles. The newly married couple often fought and closed off from each other. They each turned to harmful habits.

  • After seeing their own therapists, they realized they had to replace these habits and rituals. Journaling became an ideal way to capture and reflect on their thoughts.

  • Initially, they started their blog as a public accountability journey for things they wanted to start doing. There they wrote about their story and the tools they used to get through.

  • People started reading and sharing their writing on social media. Others started sharing their stories and from there, everything took off.

[06:54] Adding Up to 100% Together

  • Everyone has different roles in the relationship in different phases. Accept that each person can be on a different part of the journey and at different stages.

  • In a relationship, each side doesn’t always give 50-50. With the right boundaries, accept that there will be times you might have to put in more when the other person can only give a little.

  • Each individual can be at a different stage. What you can do is lead by example and be patient with each other’s needs and where they are in their journey.

[08:16] “If we love somebody, as long as we have the right boundaries in place, we have to be willing to accept the fact that it's not 50:50 at all times. With the right boundaries to feed ourselves what we need, we have to sometimes be willing to put in 75 when the other person that we love can't help but only give 25.” - Click Here to Tweet This

  • Back then, Angel and Marc weren’t always on the same page. However, they both shared and supported each other’s progress which helped them understand.

  • Progress is an important thing to celebrate and share. There may still be a long way to go but know that you’ve gone a little bit further than before.

[11:47] How Daily Rituals Can Make or Break You

  • A mistake people often make is focusing too much on the big defining moments and undervaluing the little, everyday things that lead to the big outcomes.

  • Gratitude can be easy on good days. However, during the darker times, it’s harder to practice if you haven’t been doing it regularly in the first place.

  • The more you practice good habits, the easier it will be for you to do them through the good and the bad. It can take a lot of practice to get this rhythm.

[13:40] “Do the stuff regularly on the good days so that on the dark days, you have that a little bit closer to the top of your mind. And that makes all the difference in the world.” - Click Here to Tweet This

  • You have to constantly show up and do these rituals. When the hard times inevitably occur, you’re prepared to keep showing up when it can count the most.

  • This is true for journaling. Capturing your thoughts and feelings during dark times can give you an opportunity to reflect and learn later on with a calmer, clearer mind.

[17:02] Setting Roles and Boundaries in a Relationship

  • Marc and Angel always enjoy each other’s company. They understand that they have different roles where they can best show up individually and complement each other.

[17:51] “We have different roles. We understand how we best show up in our family and in our business individually. And how we can complement each other versus trying to overstep or put the other person in their place” - Click Here to Tweet This

  • They’ve set boundaries that are supportive of their goal to help people. Their respective strengths help them achieve this.

  • Angel’s strength is her organizational and business-focused skills. Meanwhile, Marc is more creative and takes the role of testing new ideas and managing their social media.

  • They give each other their autonomy and don’t overstep their roles.

  • In the beginning, they felt guilty whether or not they were working or spending time with family. It was an issue of boundaries that they needed to put in place and follow.

[22:03] Habits When Working From Home

  • Your environment is everything especially when working from home. Tie a location to specific tasks where you can get things done.

  • To live life to the fullest, it’s important to tune into how you feel when you’re working and realize when you need an environmental change.

  • Move around to different areas both inside and outside your home to tap into what you need.

  • Find the environment that works best for you. If you’re in the wrong environment, you can be easily distracted.

  • Theme your days. Allocate specific days of the week for specific things so you know what you need to do for that time.

[26:34] Boundaries At Work

  • A common mistake most people make in business and personal life is checking your social media, email, and more first thing in the morning. It’s best to do it later on.

  • Follow your themed days. If weekends are for families then your priority then isn’t checking business emails.

  • Give yourself permission to have those boundaries. Everything will continue to be okay even if you don’t check your email.

[28:21] “I don't check email at all on Saturday and Sunday and the world still spins. It's okay. So it's also what we're holding ourselves to, the expectations we're putting on ourselves.” - Click Here to Tweet This

  • It can be tough at first to have these boundaries but over time, it will get easier.

  • Have a To-Don’t List by your workstation. Write down things you shouldn’t prioritize for that day. The visual reminder can help you get into the rhythm of the ritual.

[32:56] Favorite Quotes To Live By

  • Angel’s favorite quote goes “How you spend your days is how you spend your life.” It reminds her of the importance of the everyday joys and activities in life.

  • It encourages her to slow down, appreciate the moment, and be present rather than waiting for the big defining moment.

[33:15] “It's not about the big vacation or the big defining moment, but it's about the daily activities and the joy you bring into your life on the daily in the presence and acceptance.” - Click Here to Tweet This

  • For Marc, his favorite quote is “Be here now.” It’s his reminder to be present and choose to take control over what we can and let go of what we can’t.

  • Rosie’s favorite quote is “Tell me what it is you’ll do with your one wild and precious life.” It encourages her to see how she can live life to the fullest and on purpose.

  • Another memorable quote for Angel is “Nothing is good or bad as our thinking makes it so.” You might only see problems but from another perspective, there are also opportunities.

[38:23] Making Calmness Your Superpower

  • Calmness can be your superpower by grounding yourself. One way you can do this is by being hyper-present and focused on whatever you’re doing.

  • Workouts can give u a sense of control. It’s good for your body and grounding for the mind.

  • Focusing on your breath and feeling out your body can also ground you. A quick body scan of the different sensations in different parts of your body helps.

  • For Angel, it’s bringing awareness to the toughest parts of your day. Identify where you need it the most and see how you can bring patience and calmness into that.

[41:47] Key Takeaways From Marc and Angel

  • Marc’s key takeaway is to be patient and present with yourself.

  • Build consistent and positive rituals in your life through small things like structuring your days or journaling. Maintain these rituals and boundaries that support them

  • Don’t worry about your goals on a daily basis. Just stay on track and you’ll make progress little by little. Celebrate and give yourself credit for moving forward.

  • Angel reminds you to accept yourself where you are at the moment and accept others as well. You’re only in control of how you show up and move forward.

  • True acceptance comes first. Only then can you take the next step in the right direction.
