Holy Sh!t We're Alive: Creating Your Purpose with Doug Cartwright

How many times have you thought about what your purpose in life is? The world tells us now and again that the key to unlocking the best life is finding your purpose. But it's a journey so difficult that many people end up spending their whole lives without getting even an inch closer to it. Instead of letting this chase dictate your life, it's time to shift the narrative and take control. You don't find your purpose — you create it.

In this episode of Radically Loved, Doug Cartwright joins us to share the driving force behind his book, Holy Sh!t We're Alive. Doug discusses the childhood trauma that shaped his perspective about himself growing up and how he showed up later in life. He explains the importance of self-respect in creating a healthy relationship with yourself and nurturing self-love. Most importantly, he highlights the power of shifting our mindsets on purpose.

If you want to know how to provide meaning to your purpose, this episode is for you!

Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode:

    Episode Highlights

[01:54] Setting the Bar Too High for Yourself

    • Reading Holy Sh!t We're Alive came at a perfect time for Rosie when she was feeling lost during her book launch.

    • Rosie had to shame herself for feeling tired upon launching her book. She resonated with the book’s message.

    • We feel frustrated and angry when our expectations of how life is supposed to unfold aren’t met.

    • As a result, we tend to force our will to get to our idea of how our lives should be.

    • Doug speaks from his experience as an ex-Mormon and ex-millionaire.

    [07:41] Childhood Experience and Trauma

    • Doug's work stems from Dr. Carl Jung's quote: "Until you make your subconscious conscious, it will guide your life, and you'll call it fate."

    • Everyone had experienced trauma in their childhood. Many people downplay their trauma because it doesn't fit the world's common narrative.

    • Trauma is anything that creates a negative story in your mind.

[08:43] Seeking Validation and Wanting to Feel Enough

    • Doug’s first moment of trauma was getting teased for being the fat kid in second grade.

    • His subconscious wound became the force for how he showed up later in life. He got caught up in accomplishing things to prove his worth and get validation.

    • He made a million dollars at 24, thinking that he'd be seen as enough. He learned the hard way that it doesn't work that way.

    • We are constantly fighting with life. Doug ties this down to the introduction of his book about the cosmic perspective.

[10:36] Doug: “We are on a rock. We are orbiting a star. We're going 60,000 miles per hour, hurtling through space. And within our own galaxy, there's hundreds of billions of other planets. And within the known universe, there's up to 2 trillion different galaxies with billions of planets within those galaxies. And no one knows why.” - Click Here to Tweet This

[11:59] Doug’s Driving Force Behind Writing a Book

    • Doug doesn’t believe everyone has a purpose; the purpose we have is the meaning we give it.

    • First, he identified his wounds and healed them. What followed was figuring out what he was going to do in the gap between life and death.

    • He decided to spend a period of his time on Earth writing his story into a book.

    • His intention behind writing the book was not because he felt it was his destiny. It was about wanting to share his experience to help other people.

[12:46] Doug: “Life happened before I was born. Life is going to happen after I die. So what am I going to do with this gap in between — between my birth and my death — what am I going to do?” - Click Here to Tweet This

[16:14] Guiding Words for People Who Feel Stuck and Feel Less

    • We don't want the thing — the house, relationship, and the car; we want the feeling we think they will bring.

    • Wanting to feel respected, loved, and appreciated are people's common expectations after achieving something.

    • You can feel well-respected, loved, and appreciated without achieving a massive external thing. It’s about focusing on things that bring those on a day-to-day basis.

    • The relationship you have with yourself sets the tone for every other relationship you have.

[18:53] The Process of Integrating Self-Love into Your Life

    • It was a massive shift for Doug. He always believed something was wrong with his body.

    • For a long time, he tried to constantly hate himself into a new body.

    • Doug made two major mindset shifts: seeing himself in a romantic relationship with his body and focusing on what is great about his body.

    • Treating his body with respect was a natural byproduct of learning to focus on what he loved about it.

    • Staying consistent with how he treats his body became easy because it now comes from a place of love and respect.

[23:33] Providing Meaning to Your Purpose

    • It stems from the idea Doug coined as the “happy when syndrome.”

    • He didn’t realize until he was over 30 years old that he was constantly waiting for his life to begin.

    • It’s about battling the idea that you have a divine purpose. Only then can you recreate yourself.

    • All we have is now. You’ll look back at this present moment as your glory days in the future.

    • We have the potential to change our lives in any way we want. You can create the purpose within you instead of seeking and trying to discover it.

[25:30] Doug: “It's now. The present moment is all we have. And the beauty of the present moment, I will say, it's never “not now” — it's only “now,” and this is all we have.” - Click Here to Tweet This

[27:48] What Doug Feels Most Excited About

    • Doug's a big believer in the law of compounding. The compounding interest is one of the wonders of the world.

    • As an investor, he’s excited about the startups he has his hands on.

    • In 2017, he left his sales career and became a certified meditation teacher. His first three years of coaching were a failure financially.

    • His aha moment came in a couple of months ago around incorporating his interpersonal development work into his sales skills.

    • Building upon the success of his book, he’s excited about the launch of his new mastermind called the Sales Alchemy.

[26:47] Doug: “Rather than going out and trying to seek and find your purpose as if it's hiding somewhere, and you can discover it if you've looked up the right rock, you can create that purpose within you.” - Click Here to Tweet This

[32:05] How Doug Feels Radically Loved

    • He feels radically loved when he reminds himself that other people’s opinions of him do not affect his worthiness.

    • It’s that thought that he’s infinitely loved and valuable regardless of what anyone else thinks, says, or does.
